Thanasis Fokas is giving a three hour short course on an introduction to the unified transform for initial and boundary value problems for linear PDEs. The idea of the unified transform first appeared in Fokas (1997) and has since been applied to a wide range of linear and nonlinear PDEs. The first talk, on Tuesday 15 July, was an introduction to one of the simplest examples of the theory: the solution of the linear heat equation in the half space x>0. Already, this simple example contains surprises. A recommended reference for the short course is the SIAM Review article of Deconinck, Trogdon & Vasan (2014).
