On Wednesday 23 July, the Institute hosted a London Mathematical Society sponsored Spitalfields Day, organised by Mark Groves. Spitalfields Days are in honour of the Spitalfields Mathematical Society which existed in the east end of London at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. A history can be found here. Four speakers gave introductory talks on the role of pure mathematics in the theory of water waves. A group photo of the participants and speakers is above (click on the photo for full size version).
